K Pod Steals the Show
J Pod, K Pod
K Pod appeared twice in Puget Sound this week, first on Thursday the 16th when they traveled solo from Tacoma through Colvos Passage and up toward Seattle, then again Friday morning when K20 Spock led the family through Saratoga Passage with multiple direction changes. Earlier in the week, J Pod and K Pod spent Wednesday the 14th together in Holmes Harbor and Saratoga Passage, including close passes at Baby Island. Both families were also documented together on Tuesday the 13th in Colvos Passage.
K Pod dominating January sighting reports is notable. K Pod appeared in January 2025 in significant numbers, mirroring strong January presence from 2020 and 2021, but this level of sustained mid-January K Pod activity is unusual in recent years.
T137s, T36A1s, T124A2s, T49A2, T87
Bigg’s activity centered on the T137 family and T36A1s, who spent multiple days hunting in Carr Inlet and Henderson Bay and made repeated trips through the Narrows. T137A Jack repeatedly stole the show with breaches and close passes. The T124A2s moved north through Admiralty Inlet on Saturday, passing Fort Worden and Fort Casey.
T49A2 Jude and T87 Harbeson were documented in Discovery Bay on Sunday the 12th.
Gray whale CRC531 Gretchen was feeding off Mabana in Saratoga Passage on Wednesday morning. Gray whales returning to Saratoga Passage this time of year is an annual tradition.
